As a photographer, there are moments that truly capture the magic of the holiday season, and my Christmas tree farm family photos have become some of my absolute favorites. There’s something about the crisp winter air, the smell of evergreen trees, and the joy of seeing your families and how much they’ve grown in the last year that makes these sessions so special.
Why Christmas Tree Farm Family Photos are Magical
This year’s Christmas tree farm family photos at Pfaff’s Old Time Farm were no exception. I had the privilege of photographing families in the most picturesque setting, surrounded by lush green trees adorned with simple, timeless ornaments. It’s a reminder that Christmas is about connection, tradition, and love.
How do you get our kids to smile for photos?
My favorite way to capture authentic smiles with your children is to give them simple tasks to focus on. These tasks might seem random at times, and sometimes they are, but they serve a greater purpose – keeping the child engaged and relaxed rather than fixated on “taking a photo”. For example, I might say, “Look up at the sky – can you spot a plane? Now look at me!” or, ” Tickle your dad’s nose with yours. Give your mama a kiss on the cheek. Say ‘apple!” These little prompts not only shift their focus but also naturally change their expression, creating sweet memorable moments.
As a photographer, I’ve found this approach far more effective than the chaos of multiple commands coming from mom, dad, and me all at once. It creates a sense of playfulness and connection that lets their personalities shine through in every shot.
Capturing Cozy Neutrals and Warm Smiles
The first family’s session was filled with warm smiles and cozy neutrals. Their soft whites and subtle textures perfectly complemented the natural backdrop, making their portraits feel classic and elegant. The children’s excitement was contagious as they held little ornaments, making the photos even more personal and memorable.
Adding Style with Plaid and Earthy Tones
The second family brought a touch of plaid and warmth with their coordinated outfits. Their choice of earthy tones paired with cream sweaters was not only festive but also incredibly stylish. The joy on their little ones’ faces as they cuddled close was a true reflection of the season’s spirit.
What I love most about Christmas tree farm family photos is their authenticity. It may feel a little stressful, but you forget all about that when you get your photos back. They reflect your families time spent together. Kids giggle as they run between the trees. Parents share quick smiles with each other. These little moments make the season and your photos feel magical.
