As a Tacoma brand photographer, I know that preparing for a personal branding photoshoot can bring up a lot of questions.
What should I wear? How many outfits do I need? Should I hire a makeup artist? What should I bring? And what if I feel completely awkward in front of the camera?
First, let me put your mind at ease: You don’t need to have everything figured out before we meet.
A personal branding session isn’t about looking perfect. It’s about creating photographs that genuinely represent your business and connect with the people you want to serve. M
y job is to guide you through the process, so by the time your session arrives, you’ll know exactly what to expect. Here are the questions I get asked most often.
What should I wear for a branding photoshoot?
Choose clothing that feels like an elevated version of what you normally wear when working with clients. Your clothing should support your brand—not distract from it.
If your audience met you tomorrow, would your outfit make sense for your brand?
A few tips:
- Wear clothes that fit well and make you feel confident.
- Stick with timeless pieces instead of trendy styles.
- Play with fabrics and textures, even if they’re the same color.
- Avoid clothing with large logos or busy graphics unless they’re part of your brand.
I will help coordinate your outfits when we strategize so what you wear is a representation of your and your brand.
How many outfits should I bring?
For most branding sessions, 3–5 outfits creates plenty of variety.
Think about different parts of your business:
- Your everyday working outfit
- Something polished for your website
- A casual lifestyle look
- A dressier option if your brand calls for it
The goal isn’t simply changing clothes—it’s creating different content for different marketing purposes.
What props should I bring to a branding shoot?
Only bring items that genuinely represent your business. Branding photography is about telling your story. If something is genuinely part of that story, let’s include it.
Ask yourself:
“Would my clients expect to see this when they work with me?”
If the answer is yes, it probably belongs in your session.
Some ideas include: Products you sell, Packaging, Business cards, Tools of your trade, Favorite books, Fresh flowers, Branded materials, items you use in daily life.
On our strategy call, I will dive deep into your business and we will come up with a plan with what props to bring that will enhance your images.
How do I prepare for a personal branding session?
The best branding photos don’t happen by accident—they happen through thoughtful planning.
Before your session, I recommend:
- Defining your ideal client
- Making a list of where you’ll use your photos
- Planning the stories you want your images to tell
- Creating a simple shot list
- Gathering outfits and props ahead of time
- Getting plenty of rest the night before
I also walk every client through a planning questionnaire so we can create images that actually serve your business—not just fill a gallery.
What colors photograph best for branding?
Neutral colors almost always photograph beautifully. We start with the base and then incorporate your brand colors through accessories, products, flowers, or small styling details.
Now if your brand is all about color and patterns and it represent you, then Bring It On! I am all about intentional planning, and making colors work together and not clash.
Should I hire a hair and makeup artist?
I highly recommend it.
Professional hair and makeup isn’t about changing the way you look.
It’s about helping you look polished, camera-ready, and confident while saving you time editing later.
A professional understands how makeup photographs under studio and natural light and can help create a look that still feels like you.
Think of it as investing in the overall experience—not just the photos.
What if I’m awkward in front of the camera?
This is probably the number one thing people tell me.
“What do I do with my hands? How do I stand?.”
Good news…
You don’t need to.
I’ll guide you through the session. Instead of forcing stiff poses, I give simple direction that helps you relax and creates natural photographs.
By the end of the session, most clients tell me,
“That was actually a lot of fun.”
Feeling awkward at the beginning is completely normal—and it usually disappears within the first few minutes. I believe a branding session is not a stiff pose after pose, we discover together which angles work for you that represent the best version of you.
How long does a branding photoshoot take?
Every business is different, but most branding sessions last between 2 hours to 6 hours.
The timing depends on: outfits, locations, amount of content needed, whether product photos are needed.
Rather than rushing through a checklist, I build enough time so we can create intentional images without feeling rushed.
Final Thoughts on Preparing for Your Tacoma Branding Photoshoot
The best branding sessions aren’t about perfectly coordinated outfits or knowing exactly how to pose.
They’re about showing the person behind the business.
With thoughtful planning, the right wardrobe, meaningful props, and a little guidance, you’ll walk away with a gallery full of images that work across your website, social media, marketing materials, and beyond.
If you’re ready to create photographs that truly represent your brand, I’d love to help you plan a session that’s tailored to your business and your goals.
